CSAT UPSC Paper 2026, How to score 100+ Marks ?
The CSAT UPSC Paper 2023 was the game-changer for aspirants. Many who cleared the GS Paper-1 were unable to clear the CSAT, which ended their UPSC dream.
Although the CSAT papers before and after were a bit easier, you never know about UPSC’s Googlies and Yorkers. Karma is in your hands, which I did in all of my attempts, allowing me to obtain 100+ marks consistently.
In CSAT, there are 80 questions, of which 26–27 are from each section: reading comprehension, math, and reasoning.
I am sharing five strategies that I have developed over my attempts and that have helped me.
1. Identify the exact problem for CSAT UPSC Paper
Steve Jobs: “Once you’ve pinpointed the exact problem, you’re already halfway there”.
Aspirants fail in CSAT because they don’t understand the exam’s demands, pattern, and structure. They consider it an aptitude exam, similar to the CAT or the GRE. Additionally, a lack of understanding of the paper structure leads to them solving just a few tough questions and being unable to complete the entire paper.
I have identified three methods to pinpoint the exact problem with CSAT after analyzing PYQs from 2015 to 2025.
- Among 27 questions from each section, there are nine easy, nine moderate, and nine tough questions. So, Aspirants need to focus on these nine easy questions from math and reasoning. Additionally, following the correct strategy to solve reading comprehension questions, you can easily get 20 correct out of 27, irrespective of their difficulty level. By attempting 55 questions, you can answer 40 or more correctly and score 90 or more marks.
- Usually, there are 80 questions. Look at them as the set of 10 questions, i.e., a total of 8 sets. From those 10 questions, you’ll see an equal distribution of easy, moderate, and tough. You won’t get five easy questions or five tough questions in a row. You need to develop an eye to find the easy ones in each set.
- 30-second rule: In 30 seconds, you need to decide if you want to attempt the question or not. You need to attempt around 50-55 questions, based on your accuracy, to pass the cut-off. Leaving the questions is as important as attempting the questions.
2. Reading comprehension for CSAT UPSC Paper
I have consistently scored 23–24 out of 27 on reading comprehension by following these five strategies.
- Don’t read the reading comprehension passage directly. Scan the question and identify the themes, then read the passage. It gives you more clarity about the passage.
- Apply intelligent guessing that you have developed in Paper-1 (also discussed in our other blog and YouTube). For example, finding the extreme statements in the questions and eliminating them.
- Understand the meaning of terms like message, assumptions, and inference as UPSC plays with them. Understand that (a) if the question is asking about the message of the passage, then the message can’t be negative. Additionally, the message never addresses the causes and extends beyond the paragraph. (b) If the question is asking about the assumptions, they are broad and can go beyond the paragraph.
- The statements appear to have no relevance to the paragraph in question, but it seems entirely right. They can be eliminated.
- Reading newspapers is a must to solve reading comprehension because many reading comprehension are from current affairs. Reading the newspaper helps you improve your understanding. Practicing editorial reading and visualizing the points allows you to read the passage quickly.
3. Math and Reasoning for CSAT UPSC Paper
The two biggest mistakes aspirants make that lead them towards failure in CSAT are.
(i) You just study the part of the syllabus, eg, the number system or permutation, thinking they can help you get through the cut-off. CSAT 2023 was loaded with permutations and number systems, but CSAT 2024 comprised fewer questions on a similar topic.
Solution: You need to have a basic understanding of each theme in the syllabus (approximately 30 themes). You should cover all the themes, such as clocks, directions, distance and time, averages, ratios and proportions, algebra, and number systems. The above-average understanding is essential to attempt the easy questions.
(ii) Several aspirants find math and reasoning tough and don’t attempt them. They totally rely on reading comprehension.
Solution: Be it math, reasoning, or reading comprehension, all are part of the syllabus and all require significant effort and practice. It follows similar lines to Paper-1; if you are good at polity, you cannot leave science and think of crossing the cut-off.
4. Practice PYQs and Mocks for CSAT UPSC Paper
(I) PYQs: You need to practice the previous 10 years’ PYQs, not bulky quant or reasoning books. You have to qualify from the CSAT and attempt 50-55 questions. You don’t have to clear the GRE/CAT with great percentiles.
(ii) Mocks: Taking at least 10-12 mocks before the CSAT final exam will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, manage time effectively, and create an exam-like pressure situation. This will help you gain 20+ marks more than what you are getting by not giving the mocks.
5. When to start practicing for CSAT UPSC Paper ?
Aspirants are unable to qualify for the UPSC CSE prelims because they take the CSAT too lightly, thinking it is easy and that they can cover it in the last 10-20 days. Whether you are a math student or not, questions in exams are becoming increasingly tough, and you cannot solve them within the limited time frame if you do not practice enough.
(i) For math background: Aspirant should start CSAT UPSC Prelims Paper practice at least two months before the exam
(ii) For non-math background: Aspirants should start CSAT practice at least four to six months before the exam
To conclude, I must reiterate Chanakya’s teachings that “It is more of the game of strategy. The right strategy helps you win tough wars”. UPSC doesn’t structure the paper so that all questions are tough or all questions are easy. They are checking if aspirants’ efforts and abilities can devise a strategy to crack the tough-looking exam. Allow yourself sufficient time to understand the CSAT exam and develop a strategic approach thoroughly. Following the mentioned strategy and practicing enough, any aspirant can triumph in CSAT, just as I did.
